Automotive Legend: George Barris 1925-2015

George Barris is a legend in automotive circles for his innovations, marketing prowess and cutting edge ideas, basically he thought outside the box when it came to vehicle design and he was an unstoppable force of Public Relations for custom show cars. He is considered the Patron Saint of Kustom Cars and a Founding Father of Kustom Kulture.

His contributions to the automotive industry created an avenue for the custom car world to have mainstream recognition  and led the way for custom car fabricators to have top notch recognition for their craft. Goerge was tireless promoter as a Goodwill Ambassador for the custom car and hot rod scene and always seen at car shows with a smile.   We once asked him what his favorite car was and he told us they were all his babies but that he had a special place in his heart for his Golden Sahara.

George was also responsible not only for the Batmobile, Batphone and Bat Bike, but model car kits, celebrity TV cars and for the "Custom Query" column in our magazines.  You can refer to our back issues for coverage on his in-depth interview where we scooped his just released book (2015), his "Back To The Fifties" Culver City car shows, the Nordskog Vette and Mike Garner's Triton. Our condolences to his friends and family and to the industry that has lost a true icon. We loved George and he will deeply missed. (Photo by Anna Marco/Art by Caitlin Shea)
